Caring for Your Trees

Tree Care GuideIn this sweltering summer heat, it can be hard to know how much and how long to water your trees, when to fertilize them, and how to diagnose problems with them.  It would take years to learn all the intricacies of tree husbandry (that’s our job), but we want to address some of the most common tree care questions here.  Caring for each tree is a unique process based on micro-climate, soil type, weather and tree type, but here are some general guidelines for caring for your trees year-round.  Also check out our recent post Tree Watering Tips. And if you have any specific questions, feel free to call us at 325-676-0086.

Don’t forget, here at Mankin and Sons Gardens, we carry a full line of shade trees and ornamentals at all sizes and price points.  Plus, we offer free planting within the city limits for trees worth $300 or more!

Summer
-Water trees 2-3 times per week
-Fertilize once (around July) with a 3-1-2 ratio slow release fertilizer*
-A tree whose leaves are turning brown and crispy or that is losing its
leaves is most likely under-watered.

Fall
-Water trees 1-2 times per week based on the temperature and rainfall
-Consider mulching younger trees with their fallen leaves

Winter
-Water every other week
-Water deeply before hard freezes
-Do not fertilize

Spring
-Water trees 1-2 times per week based on the temperature and rainfall
-Treat trees with a systemic insecticide to prevent unwanted pests and
disease (See a Mankin & Sons consultant)*
- Fertilize once (around April) with a 3-1-2 ratio fertilizer (this can
be done in combination with insect treatment)*

Note:
When watering trees, water must be left on the area long enough to soak in
several feet to the roots. By hand: 20-30 min. With a soaker hose: 1-3 hours.

*Be sure to read and follow all directions on manufacturer labels when using
fertilizers and insecticides.
